Wooden Mask 2
Carved from a log of black walnut this piece is 18" tall x 8" wide x 5" deep. This mask was created first because it followed the shape of the original log and as I was carving the details presented themselves. I don't know exactly why I shaped the mouth the way it is at the time of carving. But after the mask was finished I was asked by my friend Gabe Lueders to help him with a performance piece he was doing.
The performance was a musical act performed by the two of us, Gabe was on guitar and I played my trumpet. Once we had the trumpet involved I new which mask I could wear to add to the show. It was quite a musical act. After the music Gabe toppled a spiral structure he had built up out of thousands of little 1" x 2" blocks of wood. We will have to post the video of this performance sometime.
